In Own Image is a series of plaster hand sculptures juxtaposed through the assemblage of found objects and memorabilia, which collectively depict visual storytelling from personal and fictional narratives, inspired by the iconography of the Nigerian pidgin language in miniature installations. The individual hand sculptures portray postural languages from pidgin language expressions like ‘Waka! (fuck you/ God punish you) and Chop am! (eat this)’ to more universal postural language expressions ’Fuck you!, Fist of power and Surrender.’

A display of domestic violence takes centre stage while onlookers and commentators surround, watching in awe without intervention amidst the events that unfold before them. Some are unillusioned by the happenings of the day as some may have equally suffered in personal episodes of violence either inflicted or received.
A veil of patriarchy hovers over the scene protecting the instigator and without intervention and resolution to draw of blows and sentiments of momentary hatred, both opponents are defeated in their tussle, until Àkòbí intervenes.
Shame, coward, hurt, blood, upset, scars, anger, brokenness, fragmentation, dysfunction.
It shouldn’t be like this.
